Day 49: Friday 04/22/16, Live Oak, FL to High Springs, FL

Flowers in full bloom along one of the roads we rode today.

Day 49 distance: 54 miles

Total miles:  2720 miles

Elevation gain: 749 feet

Map of today's ride:

Last night at the daily rider's meeting, Bubba announced that the route for today's ride would be changed to get us off Hwy 90. The change added 4.7 miles to the ride, which still resulted in a short ride day of 53 miles. The change was good as the new route took us on quiet country roads with next to no traffic. The weather during the ride alternated between overcast and blue sky, but shortly after we arrived at tonight's camp at O'Leno State Park, outside of High Springs, Florida, it clouded up and we had a rain shower. We are staying in cabins so let it rain! The temperature currently is 82 degrees with high humidity. Tomorrow is a needed day off as we have ridden 420 miles over the last six  days. After our day off, we have 129 miles left to ride before reaching St. Augustine.

A small pretty lake early on today's ride.

There were no shoulders on many of the country roads we rode on today. However, the traffic was so light, none were needed to ride safely.
A nice looking pine plantation. Probably not much older than ten years old.
At one time there was a Pony Express Trail between White Oaks, Florida and Lincoln, New Mexico. Part of the trail in Wellborn, Florida, has been replaced with cobblestone to commemorate the historic trail .
"Mission Control,  Earth Explorer has landed!"  I have no idea what this structure was, or its use, as it doesn't seem like a likely spot for a telescope (or does it?). Perhaps an elaborate cover over a hot tub?
Beautiful flowers on both sides of the road in this stretch of highway. Yellow daisies on the left and a purple flower on the right.
Interesting how the mail boxes are off the road, with their back facing the road. I am sure this arrangement is much safer for the mail delivery person. Couldn't do that in an area with real ditches and/or snow!
Canoe, kayak, and tube rentals appears to be a big business in this part of Florida.
Our home for the next two nights at O'Leno State Park, Florida. It rained and blew hard earlier this evening so glad we are not in a tent! In fact, last night was our last night of tenting for this year's C2C.
