Day 1: Saturday 3/05/16, The Pacific Ocean at San Diego to Alpine, California

Day 1 Distance: 43 miles

Total Distance: 43 miles

Elevation Gain: 3530 feet

Map of today's ride:

Today was a perfect day to start the 2016 C2C ride. We woke up to a mostly cloudy sky but the temperature was warm with only shirt sleeves required for most riders the entire day. We dipped our wheels in the Pacific Ocean at 9 am and left a short time later. The only wind today was a gentile breeze against our backs and the skies cleared up as the day progressed.

There was a lot of climbing today with over 3500 feet of elevation gained. For me, the climbing was much easier than last year, probably due to being in better shape and a few pounds lighter than last year. Everyone did well although the riders who live in snow country that were able to only train on trainers had a tougher time. I typically experience leg cramps the first night after rides with a lot of climbing. To hopefully help that problem, I had scheduled a 30 minute appointment with our traveling massage therapist at the end of today's ride.  I left the session with my legs feeling renewed. I will let you know tomorrow if I make it through the night without leg cramps!

Day 1 can be best described with the following pictures:

Bubba giving final instructions to the riders in front of the Ocean Villa Inn before heading down to the beach for our wheel dipping.

Your blogger after wheel dipping, heading up from the beach to begin this year's ride.

Heading east, riding a trail along a tide inlet shortly after leaving the ocean front.

We rode along Friar Road and passed by Qualcomm Stadium, home of the San Diego Chargers.

Looking back on the trail we rode through Mission Trails Regional Park.

A very large Prickly Pear type cactus with a pretty flowering bougainvillea next to it.

Pretty roadside wild flowers.

`
Pretty mountain views after significant climbing, close to our day's destination.

A small view of our campground for the night.

Ann, our traveling chef, prepared an outstanding dinner to conclude our first day. Everything was delicious!

We even had a pretty sunset to conclude a perfect Day 1 of this year's C2C ride!

There are showers forecast tomorrow so I already installed fenders on my bicycle for the ride. I would rather be only wet than completely soaked. :). Regardless of what happens tomorrow, all forecasts point to rain showers the next few days.
Coffee will be ready at 6:00 am in the morning with breakfast ready at 7:00 am. Everyone is turning in early tired from today's effort!
